Men: Be Healthy Today!

Men: Bea Healthy Today!June is a month dedicated to men. Not only is it Father’s Day, but every June has become dedicated to Men’s health awareness. According to menshealthmonth.org this is the opportunity for doctors, individuals, families and communities to encourage men and boys to take the proper precautions in protecting their own health.

Did You Know?

Interesting facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • There are nearly 148 million men (all ages) living in the United States (2008)
  • Percent of men over the age of 18 in fair or poor health: 12%
  • Percent of men over the age of 18 who participate in physical activity: 34%
  • Percent of men over the age of 20 who are obese: 32%
  • Percent of men over the age of 20 with hypertension: 31%
  • Percent of males under the age of 65 without health insurance: 18%

Top 3 Leading Causes of Death in Men:

  1. Heart Disease: 26.3%
  2. Cancer: 24.1%
  3. Accidents (unintentional injuries): 6.6%

Tips for a Healthy Life:

  • Eat smart: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.
  • Avoid tobacco products
  • Stay active: studies show you should be active at least 2 ½ hours per week
  • Protect yourself: get recommended screenings, take preventative medicines (if necessary)

How Can You Help?

  • Wear blue day: pick a day in June and wear blue to raise more awareness for men’s health
  • Hold a men’s education seminar at your workplace or community center:
  • Talk to men and boys in your life about the importance of health maintenance
  • Encourage group physical activities; hiking, biking, football, basketball, etc. It’s good for your heart!
