Spring Allergies

Spring weedsWho’s excited for the sniffling, sneezing, hacking and itchy eyes that come with spring allergies? Oh the joy! If you are one that suffers from them, you are not alone. Nearly 35 million Americans experience some form of spring allergies every year (WebMD.com).

Even though there is no cure for spring allergies there are different methods you can try to calm them.

Step 1: What Am I Allergic To?

Talk with your doctor and see if taking an allergy test will help distinguish what type of allergies you may be suffering from. According to Neil Kao, MD, “The allergy skin test is the quickest most inexpensive and most accurate way to find out what you are allergic to, whether it’s mold, grass pollen, or a type of weed.”

Step 2: Managing Spring Allergies

By Heather Hatfield, contributing writer from WebMD magazine:

  • Visit your local drug store- Start by taking over-the-counter, non-sedating, antihistamine, such as generic Claritin or Zyrtec, every morning.
  • Temporary nose spray, if necessary. Do not use for more than two to three days.
  • Antihistamine eye drops- these types of eye drops will not only reduce redness but will also treat the root of your allergy.
  • Use lozenges to sooth a sore throat.
  • If none of these options work, consult your physician.

Step 3: Beyond Over-The-Counter Medication

Try to avoid allergy triggers by;

  • Keeping your house and car windows closed.
  • Not turning on the ceiling fans (this will only spread the allergens around).
  • Taking a shower immediately after being outdoors.
  • ashing your bedding, pajamas, clothing, and pillows often.
