Education

Master’s Degree in Nursing with training as a family nurse practitioner.

Maintains current and in good standing Missouri license as Registered Professional Nurse. Maintains current and in good standing Document of Recognition as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

Description

Family nurse practitioners at the Family Medical Walk-in Clinic (FMWIC) practice autonomously and in collaboration with physicians to diagnose, treat, and manage patients’ problems in the urgent care setting.

Responsibilities

Assessment
-obtains a relevant health and medical history
-performs a physical examination based on age and history
-performs or orders preventive and diagnostic procedures based on the patient’s age and history
-identifies health and medical risk factors.
Diagnosis
-utilizing critical thinking in the diagnostic process
-synthesizing and analyzing collected data
-formulating a differential diagnosis on the history, physical exam, and diagnostic test results
-establishing priorities to meet the healthcare needs of the individual, family, and community.
Treatment Planning
-selecting appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions
-developing a patient education plan
-arranging for appropriate consultation/referral for those cases outside the nurse practitioner’s scope of expertise, or outside FMWIC’s resources.
Implementation of Plan
-works closely with support staff, patient, family, and external resources to put realistic treatment plan into action which is individualized, consistent with standards of care, and based on scientific principles, theory, and clinical expertise.
Follow-Up and Evaluation
-Maintains legible, current FMWIC medical record and additional documents to insure that each patient receives appropriate follow-up as outlined in the treatment plan.
-Consults with support staff for guidance in meeting patient needs determined through follow-up.
-Reassesses and modifies the treatment plan as necessary to achieve healthcare goals.

 

Qualifications

Demonstrated clinical ability in primary care, urgent care, or similar setting with ability to learn new skills necessary for optimal functioning in the urgent care setting.

Must be able to provide patient care services typical of the urgent care setting, as consistent with the diagnostic, treatment planning, and follow-up process outlined above. Typical clinical conditions treated by family nurse practitioners at FMWIC include, but are not limited to: colds and flu, earaches, sore throats, bronchitis, sinus infections, skin rashes, urinary problems, simple laceration repair, sprains, strains and bruises, minor injuries, minor burns, work-related illness and injuries, physical exams, drug screens, medication refills for travelers, travel medicine and referrals for problems beyond the capabilities of the clinic. Exercises a high degree of initiative, clinical judgment, discretion and decision making to achieve patient care objectives. Works closely with Medical Director, collaborating physician, or on-duty South Clinic physician to facilitate sound clinical decision making for all patients.
